Diffractive Processes at the LHC

چکیده

We consider diffractive processes which can be measured at the LHC. Analysis of diffractive events will give unique information about the high energy asymptotics of hadron scattering. In semihard diffraction one may study the partonic structure of the Pomeron. Central Exclusive Diffractive production provides a possibility to investigate the new particles (Higgs bosons, SUSY particles,...) in an exceptionally clean environment.

Diffractive Physics with ALICE at the LHC: the control of quantum collisions

We report on the status of the construction and installation of a new detector in the forward region of the ALICE experiment at the LHC. This detector will allow the study of processes with gaps at larger rapidity than those presently covered. A setup of two stations called AD (stands for ALICE Diffractive) on the right and on the left of the interaction point enhances significantly the efficie...

Double - diffractive processes in high - resolution missing - mass experiments at the Tevatron

We evaluate, in a model-independent way, the signal-to-background ratio for Higgs→ bb̄ detection in exclusive double-diffractive events at the Tevatron and the LHC. For the missing-mass approach to be able to identify the Higgs boson, it will be necessary to use a central jet detector and to tag b quark jets. The signal is predicted to be very small at the Tevatron, but observable at the LHC. Ho...

At the LHC, diffractive physics will be explored by the dedicated experiment TOTEM whose Technical Design Report has been approved in Summer 2004. The experimental programme will be carried out partly in TOTEM standalone mode for purely forward phenomena like elastic scattering, and partly in collaboration with CMS for processes requiring a full rapidity coverage. ATLAS and ALICE are interested...

Can perturbative QCD predict a substantial part of diffractive LHC / SSC physics ?

We examine a model of hadronic diffractive scattering which interpolates between perturbative QCD and non-perturbative fits. We restrict the perturbative QCD re-summation to the large transverse momentum region, and use a simple Regge-pole parametrization in the infrared region. This picture allows us to account for existing data, and to estimate the size of the perturbative contribution to fut...

Prospects for New Physics observations in diffractive processes at the LHC and Tevatron

We study the double-diffractive production of various heavy systems (e.g. Higgs, dijet, tt̄ and SUSY particles) at LHC and Tevatron collider energies. In each case we compute the probability that the rapidity gaps, which occur on either side of the produced system, survive the effects of soft rescattering and QCD bremsstrahlung effects. We calculate both the luminosity for different production m...
